Main Square and Belfry, Brugge

On the Main Square you find very beautiful old houses, the Belfry and "Het Provinciaal Hof". In the middle of the square you find the statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck. They organised the violent revolution against "Philip the Fair" of France in 1302 and lead Brugge to victory during the Battle of the golden spurs.
The Belfry dates from 1240 and is one of the monuments indicated on the World Heritage list of UNESCO. The 83m high Belfry has been destroyed several times by fire but was always rebuilt. Besides being a trade house for crafts, the Belfry tower was also a watchtower to spot fire in Brugge.
