Support the St. Michiels church in Leuven

The "St. Michielskerk" in Leuven is very beautiful but in need for renovation. The church doesn't get enough funds from the Heritage foundation "Monumentenzorg" and because of that the refurbishing will take a lot longer. Most likely around 25 years. During my visit I met a friendly elder who explained a bit the history. Regularly there is still a mass but the church is also used for exhibitions, concerts and other events. An overview of the events can be found on their website. The AMC Brass Band playing movie soundtracks (13 July) or the Youth orchestra of London (27 August) are performing during the summer period. We are certainly going to one of the two concerts.

No wedding cars but horses in Herent, congratulations

Congratulations to Gert Bosmans and Katrien Jaubin for their wedding in Herent on 18 June 2011. The members of the "Linderuiters" with beautiful horses joined the wedding carriage. A special sight you don't see every day. Normally the horsepower is only found under the hood of a limousine or oldtimer car. A nice variation on a traditional ceremonial cars.

The crypt of the Dutch Royal Family in Delft

On the market (“Markt”) of Delft, vendors are selling there products. The “Nieuwe Kerk” or New Church has a dominant position on the square. The church is called like this because it was the second church of the city. The first one was called the old church. The naming conventions are indeed simple. This is a special place, 56 members of the Dutch Royal family are buried in the crypt of the church. The first royal, Prince Willem I was added in 1584. December 2004, the last funeral took place for Prince Bernhard the husband of Queen Juliana. On displays you find back the history of the Royal family and the role of each King or Queen. Like King Willem I who was the King of Belgium, Luxemburg and The Netherlands from 1815 till 1830. The church architecture itself is also interesting: there is a large organ, a new stained glass artwork and big chandeliers. The most important aspect of the church is the crypt and history of the Dutch Royal Family.

The studio of Vermeer in Delft, The master of light

What do you do on a rainy day in Delft? You could pay a visit to the studio of Johannes Vermeer. Vermeer is one of the most famous Dutch painters and lived in Delft. During the 17th century, he made 60 paintings but only 37 were found back. These are now spread all over the world in the most prestigious museums. They call him the master of light because he could bring his paintings to life by playing with light, sun and shadow. In the house you can see his studio and experiment with different light settings. Replicas of all his known works are shown in an exhibition. The paintings we love the most are: “the little street”, “the milkmaid”, “the girl with a pearl earring” and “a lady seated at the piano”. The characters seem to come to live in the paintings. Our favourite painting is “the girl with the pearl earring”, you can look at the girl from all possible angles and she seems to stare back at you. Very strange and it shows the mastership of Vermeer.

The best Carnival in Belgium, The Sinksenfoor in Antwerpen

The Sinksenfoor in Antwerp, Belgium, is probably the biggest carnival fair of the country and most likely the best one. We certainly love it. There are mega attractions like Booster Maxx, XXL, Deca Dance, Wild mouse, Eclipse Virus, Polyp, small rollercoasters, rides for the children... Next to the attractions, you have many opportunities to eat a snack in one of the Pita, hamburger, pancake or candy shops. You need however to be lucky with the weather. For us it was rather clouded. The fair is located on the Vlaamse Kaai in Antwerpen and after your visit you have several places to go for a drink.

Walking in the park and meeting a golden Peace Angel, Munich

It is relaxing to walk in a park alongside the Isar river when it is sunny. It becomes interesting when you find a monument which is beautiful and holds some historical value. The Peace Angel or the “Friendensdenkmal” at the end of the Prinzregentenstrasse in Munich stood there on top of a temple watching down on the fountains. The golden statue was glittering in the sun. Each side of the temple is supported by columns in the shape of women and the four walls are decorated with a mosaic. An information plate indicated to us that this monument was built in 1899. No other data was available on the location. This is a pity. After some research, we found out the Peace Angel was constructed to celebrate the 25 years of peace between Germany and France after the war of 1870.

Saint Paul’s church, the second largest church of Munich

After the Ruhmeshalle we are now looking to the other side of the Theresiënwiese where we see one of the most important churches of Munich. This is the second largest church after the Dom or the Frauenkirche. This is also a neo-gothic church from the early 20th century, so very young. The exterior is very impressive with its towers of 96m high. The interior is sober but looks powerful. It was however not easy to visit the Saint Paul’s church, in the evening it is most of the time closed.

Bavaria overlooking the Theresiënwiese from the Ruhmeshalle

Walking on the empty Theresiënwiese in Munich you see two impressive monuments: The Saint Paul's church and the Ruhmeshalle with an enormous statue of Bavaria in front of it. The Ruhmeshalle was erected on the instructions of King Ludwig I in 1853. The Greek looking temple is an open rectangle of several buildings supported by decorated columns. It resembles a bit the Parthenon in Athens but is built in New Gothic style. The more classical style with Greek and Roman element was slightly adjusted by German decorations like the Bavaria statue, the lions and the German busts. The hall contains 85 bust statues of important Germans of that era including King Ludwig I. Unfortunately we could not go into the hall. When there are festivities on the Theresiënwiese, the monument is not so visible to the visitors.

Free Rotterdam Harbour Museum, a good tip for visitors

Close to the Erasmus bridge, you find the Rotterdam Harbour Museum. This is a good tip for tourists because it is free of charge. In the Leuvehaven (Leuve Harbour) there is a walking platform between the classic boats and boards indicate the history of each vessel. On the Quay you find an old train and cranes. What we found the most interesting was an old Fire Department boat in flashy yellow. Some of the boats are more than hundred years old and still working.
