Cruising on the extremely hot Gatun Lake, Panama

It’s hard to remember when it was last so hot. The temperature on the sun deck must be above 40 degrees and we cool down with still ice water and wine. The enormous Gatun Lake is totally flat, sometimes green but most of the time brown due to the turning mud from vessels passing by. Don’t under estimate the traffic on this lake, big size cargo ships are crossing us frequently.

Again we see many pelicans in the sky but also doing fly-by’s just above the water line. The trees and mountains make it so beautiful and some of the high tree top blossom. You can hear the wildlife: birds, monkeys and insects. At the end of the lake ships are waiting to cross the Gatun Locks.

Passing through the Miraflores Locks, Panama City

You enter the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal from the Pacific Ocean. It is early in the morning and we still think back of the large groups of dolphins which accompanied the ship the day before. They were with hundreds and we saw them the whole day.

The captain opened the helicopter pad for passengers so that could have a closer look at opening the locks and lifting the 120.000 ton ship up towards the Gatun Lake. On each side there is about half a meter space. The ship is kept into place by trains. This is one of the few places in the world where the captain has to hand over control of the bridge. To pass the lock, about thirty men and pilots join the ship for a safe passage.

On the grass you see a worker practicing his throw. They try to throw ropes to the ship as accurate as possible. This is a skill which needs to be kept sharp. You can see on one of the pictures how high the ship needs to be lifted per lock. This happens three times before reaching the lake level. The process takes about two hours. Above us flies a curious pelican and on the lock parades a white heron. The water is finally level and the double locks open. The next step is a relaxing day on the Panama rivers and Gatun Lake.

Expansion of the Panama Canal from close by

We are approaching the Bridge of the Las Americas on our left side you see Panama City in the fog. As soon as we leave the bridge behind us, we will enter the Panama Canal and leave the Pacific Ocean behind us. Everywhere dock or wait large container ships and big cranes to load and unload cargo. This year, the Panama Canal celebrated its 100th year anniversary.

In the near future the Panama Canal will double its capacity with its expansion project. Approaching the locks makes it clear. On the banks you see the concrete construction and heavy transportation vehicles. The new locks will ensure better water management by water-saving. This will avoid that the Gatun Lake loses too much water by using the locks. The Canal will also provide opportunities for longer, higher and wider ships to cross.

Views over the rough port of Colón, Panama

Our cruise ship the Celebrity Infinity docked during late afternoon hours in the rough port of Colón. The ship made it through the Panama Canal and just arrived in the Caribbean Sea. We have a short stop for a few hours before the ship sails off again. It is a nice opportunity for passengers to see the Panama Canal Locks after sunset with artificial lights on. We recommend only to do this via an organized guided shore excursion.

We decided to stay on board and have a look at the city from the top deck. You can see it is an industrial port, the most important of the country. Don’t wander off on your own at night, there is a lot of poverty and crime rules here.
