Discovering the origin of Tapas during wine tasting in Barcelona

We were on a wine tour and received some tapas with the wine. Our tour guide and wine expert asked us if we new the origin of tapas? Not being aware, he started explaining.

The King of Spain visited a castle and was offered a glass of wine. To ensure no flies would enter the glass, the wine producer covered the glass with a slice of ham. Before tasting the wine the King had to remove the ham, eat it and drunk the wine. So, the original tapas were for free and used to cover the opening of a wine glass.

Today tapas are sold in bars and restaurants, they are no longer free and they do not cover glasses anymore. The pictures below show the Iberian Ham and a glass of liquor covered by a tapa. We took the first picture in Arenas de Barcelona, the second one was taken in restaurant 41 degrees.

Excellent views at Promthep Cape, Phuket

On Phuket you find several good viewpoints but Promthep Cape is probably one of the best. It is easily reachable by car and you don't have to walk long distances to see spectacular cliffs and palm trees. The ocean and landscape here at the south west part of Phuket Island are just top.

On the viewpoint there is a small shrine with lots of elephant statues. This provides good photo opportunities. The elephants are present in all kinds of sizes and colors. A modern version of a lighthouse resembles a temple tower.

On the road and parking area you find local shops selling mainly shells, T-shirts, drinks and candy. We were relieved that we could buy a cold soft drink here. Just at the moment I took my pictures of the shops a cool motorcycle with a Thai family passed by. Could you imagine such a small kid on top of a motorcycle like this in Europe or the USA. No. In Thailand, this is normal.

Neen. Hier in Thailand is dat gebruikelijk.

Kabaddi and Sepaktakraw at the Asian Beach games

In Phuket we had the opportunity to visit the Asian Beach Games an Asian event with 42 participating countries. Many of the sports we already knew like jet skiing, beach volleyball, beach soccer, wrestling, badminton, running, swimming, body building, petanque...

Our best pictures are from the jet skiing and Kabaddi. What is this? We never heard about Kabaddi, after half an hour watching the game, I still did not understand it. One team tries to push out a member of the other team, sometimes it looks like they are trying to kick each other or wrestle. For sure it is a hard sport for muscular men.

I was also surprised of a sport called Sepaktakraw, it is similar like beach volleyball but the players have to kick a little ball across the net. They are not allowed to use their hands. Looks very difficult and technical.

Men mag geen handen gebruiken.

Shrine of the serene light, Phuket Town

Ting Kwan Tang is the Chinese name of this temple. It is located in Phuket Town on Phang Nga road. We only found it because it was marked on a tourist map. On the side of the street you see a small gate and behind that an alley that leads to a courtyard. There you find the Shrine and temple.

A Chinese guy came to us to say that we couldn't take any pictures of the interior of the temple. He was not pleased to see tourists in his sanctuary. For us the roof decorations and the colors are the most beautiful. The courtyard is certainly worth a visit.

This small temple at the edge of Patong Beach contains many Buddha statues. They are all well maintained. An old man approached us and said he was repainting everything of this site on his own. He lived there as a house keeper. In exchange for a small contribution he would guide us around the complex. We gave him a tip.

What surprised us was that on the ground level we found a grave stone of a German lady and British man. They lived in Phuket and the man informed us they were died in a car accident. We wonder how many relatives would come here to visit their last resting place.
